Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) are now married and have a young son Alex (Freddie Boath). They return from an expedition to Egypt with the Bracelet of Anubis. Fooling around, Alex puts the bracelet on and it displays a hologram showing the way to the Oasis of Ahm Shere, the tomb of the legendary Scorpion King, but Alex then finds that he cannot remove the bracelet. The bracelet is sought by a horde of Egyptian cultists who succeed in raising Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and then kidnap Alex to lead them there. And so Rick and Evelyn return to Egypt in a race to stop Imhotep and rescue Alex.
